I was able to convert the main page to strict doctype and maintain, if not improve slightly, the layout. The other pages may not all be so easy. There are several things preventing the main page from being validated yet. There are about 3 steps involved in cleaning up the code on this site.
1. Convert to strict from transitional while maintaining the correct cross browser layout of the site. Very difficult.
2. Remove the obstacles that are preventing the site from being validated.
3. Fix the code until the entire site validates.
4. Take care of the minor stuff as well, like the caution statements as well. (optional)
